Electronic Glasses
Want the ability to turn your reading glasses on and off? This has to be one of the coolest new ideas; electronic eyeglasses (EmPower) from a company called PixelOptics. The glasses have tiny batteries in them that allow the wearer to decide when they need reading power turned on or off. How does this work? Inside are crystals and, "The crystals change how the lenses refract or bend light, just as varying levels of thickness do in traditional glasses" (Eisenberg). The wearer simply touches the side of his/her glasses and the crystals change to enable or disable the reading power. The glasses will need to be charged on a stand (as seen above). They will be available in the Spring and cost about $1,000 for the frames, lenses, and power charger.
